چکیده

The Nautilus Project was started in 1995 as a joint USIsrael feasibility study for using laser systems to defend against short-range artillery rockets. It has now matured into a successful laser weapon demonstration program – the Tactical High Energy Laser (THEL) Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD) Program. By now the THEL Demonstrator has engaged and destroyed a large number of artillery rockets in midflight in an extended series of demonstration tests at the US Army’s White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. The THEL ACTD hardware and development process are described in this paper, as well as the major test results. The paper also describes the operational concept for a deployed THEL weapon system and some possible growth paths for the THEL ACTD Program.

Assessment of Weather Sensitivities and Air Force Weather (afw) Support to Tactical Lasers in the Lower Troposphere Thesis

The Department of Defense (DoD) is spending millions of dollars on many Directed Energy (DE) programs. One of the programs, known as the Advanced Tactical Laser (ATL), requires the use of a high-energy laser in order to destroy ground targets from a standard C-130H aircraft. The ATL, which is still not fully operational and battle field ready, presents a great amount of potential for maintainin...

Control, Filtering and System Identification for High Energy Lasers and Laser Communications

This research developed new methods for high-performance control of laser beams in high energy laser weapons and laser communications. These methods achieve optical wavefront correction, laser beam pointing and target tracking with precision levels significantly beyond those achievable by existing methods for beam control, thereby increasing the bandwidths and target distances for which beam co...

Comparison of Climatological Optical Turbulence Profiles to Standard, Statistical and Numerical Models Using Heleeos Thesis

Optical turbulence within earth’s atmosphere plays a significant role in electromagnetic radiation propagation from a high energy laser. The index of refraction structure constant, Cn2, characterizes turbulent spatial fluctuations due to temperature gradients. These changes in the index of refraction affect the intensity of the laser wave front on its intended target. It is important to charact...

Synthesis of Al2O3-ZrO2 Nanocomposite by Mechanical Activated Self-propagating High Temperature Synthesis(MASHS) and Ignited via Laser

By consideration of unique properties of composite Al2O3-ZrO2 such as high toughness, high wear resistant and relative low thermal expansion, in this study, nanocomposite of Al2O3-ZrO2 was produced by Mechanical activated Self propagating High-temperature Synthesis (MASHS) using laser beam for ignition. First Al and ZrO2 powders were mixed in the mole ratio of 1:1 and milled for 1, 3 and 6 hour...

Experimental Study of a Flash-lamp Pumped Passively Q-Switched Nd:YAG Laser Using Cr4+:YAG Saturable Absorber

This paper deals with the experimental results of a xenon flash-lamp pumped passively Q-switched Nd:YAG laser using Cr4+:YAG saturable absorber. The need of a laser cavity to be integrated into a time-of-flight laser range finder is of great interest as an experimental investigation of several laser resonators. Two types of laser resonator, with different lengths, have been studied: the flat-fl...
